Cassie Singley
My name is Cassie Singley. I sing and play the banjo for Miles to Go. I have been singing since before I could talk, and I've played the banjo for about 8 years. My family has always been musical, so I just kind of grew up in music. Harmonizing with my dad was my favorite. I also learned to sing loudly because I had to be heard over my brothers and sisters, who had loud voices themselves.
I began playing clawhammer banjo when I was a freshman in high school. All of my brothers and sisters played instruments, except for me. I wanted to be able to play something, but I didn't want to feel like I was competing with a brother or sister because I worried they would play better than I could. So, when I saw a banjo in the newspaper, I knew it was the perfect instrument for me. Nobody would be better than me because nobody else played such a random instrument.
So basically, any musicality I possess comes from some crazy middle child obsession to be noticed at all cost. Sad.
Just to clear up the misunderstanding about the band, Trent, Karin, and I were the original Miles to Go trio. We joined up with Hilary's little band and offered the name after their feeble attempts to come up with any.
As far as the current band goes, I am the sole owner of the name (along with Robert Frost.) They all know if ever they kick me out, I am taking the band name with me. I thought Miles to Go was an appropriate name for a bluegrass band, and I love Robert Frost. Plus, I always feel like I have "miles to go before I sleep" with my busy schedule.
I am a 3rd grade teacher at Freedom Academy, which takes the majority of my time. The best part of the job is that it comes with built-in fans. I have 24 kids who think I am some kind of superstar.
The last thing to say is that I am 5'1. Everyone seems to ask that one, so I'll just keep you from wondering anymore. And I'm 23. That's a FAQ as well.
